Disciplines List – African American Studies

Whereas, Oral and written testimony given through the consultation process used for the review of minimum qualifications for faculty in the California Community Colleges, known as the “Disciplines List,” supported the following addition of the African-American Studies discipline:

Master’s degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies OR bachelor’s degree in African- American/Black/Africana Studies AND master’s degree in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent; and

Adopt the Discipline List Handbook

Whereas, The body adopted resolution 10.07 S13[1] that directed the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges to consolidate information related to the disciplines list process to ensure that all pertinent information to the process is consistent, housed in one place, and can be used by both the Standards and Practice Committee and the field;

Adding Currency Requirements in the Disciplines List

Whereas, The Community College Reform Act of 1988 (AB 1725) sought to professionalize the community college faculty policies and procedures on the model of the four year institutions rather than K-12 institutions;

Whereas, In this effort, the act eliminated any further granting of lifelong community college credentials on the expectation that currency (recency) in the area of expertise would be the expected and required standard for the qualification to teach at a California community college, not just the possession of a degree, however old and outdated;

Amend Resolution 10.05 S10

Add second resolve:

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend to the Board of Governors that, effective Fall 2014, standards must include course work equivalent to general education.

MSR Disposition: Referred to the Executive Committee to reconsider and return in Fall 2010.

Add second resolve:

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend to the Board of Governors that local academic senates consider accepting the successful completion of 60 units of higher education coursework, including those units representative of a general education, as equivalent to an associate degree.

MSR Disposition: Referred to the Executive Committee to reconsider and return in Fall 2010.
