2016 Area of Emphasis (AOE) Discipline Input Group (DIG) Meeting -- South

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: March 29, 2016

WHAT: Convening faculty to consider the establishment of an Area of Emphasis (AOE) Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC) in what was given the working title of “Law and Public Policy”.

Presently, 29 CCCs are participating in an initiative (see links at the end of this message for more information) that prescribes a seven-course curriculum at the CC intended to prepare students for law school. This initiative also requires that the colleges provide additional support to participating students and provides benefits to students upon transfer. At present, there is no clear connection between this CCC-Law effort and the CSU. Six of the seven courses typically fill a CSU general education, admissions, and/or graduation requirement. This curriculum alone or with some additions may serve a variety of majors at the CSU well, such as communication studies, criminal justice, philosophy, and political science.

WHY: This is an effort to develop Area of Emphasis (AOE) Transfer Model Curricula (TMCs) to address the SB 440 (Padilla, 2013) mandate. The Intersegmental Curriculum Workgroup (ICW), which consists of faculty and system representatives from both CCC and CSU, adopted the following working definition of an Area of Emphasis TMC:

An area of emphasis is an interdisciplinary TMC that is developed to serve multiple majors at the CSU.  Such a TMC may not have a clear department of origin at the CCC and would be designed to prepare the student for an array of majors at the CSU.

These meetings are “come one, come all” to encourage wide participation and perspectives. Travel costs will not be reimbursed, but a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Later, faculty will be appointed by their respective state senate to serve on the Faculty Discipline Review Group that will use these discussions to prepare draft documents for statewide vetting.

WHO: We need CCC faculty from the disciplines below, or related disciplines that might be a component of the proposed area of emphasis, and CSU faculty from disciplines that might be able to accept the areas of emphasis as lower division major preparation, to join in a discussion of the proposed area of emphasis (and any associated descriptors). In addition, we need an articulation officer to assist the group.
