Communicated in the President’s Update.
Whereas, Diversity, for the purposes of hiring committees, should not be limited to ethnicity and culture, but should also consider, but without establishing quotas or compromising the professional expertise of the committee, the factors of age, gender, and sexual identification and orientation, as well as disability status;
Whereas, Management cannot make faculty appointments to committees, task forces, and other groups dealing with academic and professional matters without collegial consultation with the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges as delineated in Title 5 Regulations 53203(f); and
Whereas, Title 5 53024(f) states that "whenever possible, screening committees shall include a diverse membership which will bring a variety of perspectives to the assessment of applicant qualifications;"
Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges endorse the idea that hiring committees at local colleges should be diverse in terms of race, ethnicity or cultural heritage, age, gender, sexual orientation or identity, and disability when possible and without establishing quotas or compromising the professional expertise of the committee; and
Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges encourage local senates to pursue the development of college policies and processes for the formation of diverse hiring committees that include consultation with local senates.
