Whereas, There is interest among many California community college faculty to raise the level of mastery of English composition and mathematics skills required by Title 5 Regulations to transfer-level courses in those disciplines; and
Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has endorsed the position that transfer-level English and mathematics be required of students who are granted an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree (1983);
Resolved, That the Academic Senate hold a breakout at the Fall 2002 Plenary Session to provide for debate and subsequent development of a position on whether to recommend that the Board of Governors amend Title 5Regulation 55805.5 to include as a requirement for the Associate Degree transfer-level English composition and mathematics; and
Resolved, That the Academic Senate develop a summary of arguments in support of and in opposition to raising the level of mastery in English composition and mathematics required for the Associate Degree for use at the Fall 2002 breakout.
