It was never our business in the first place. There is nothing for us to do with it.

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges supports the principle of the separation of church and state;

Whereas, The California community colleges serve a diverse population, including people with a wide range of religious beliefs and practices;

Whereas, Given that our mission is to provide open access to education, it is not within the scope of the California community college mission to represent students, faculty, staff, or the wider community in religious matters; and

Whereas, The Academic Senate respects the right of the individual to determine whether, how, when, and what to worship, and we believe that this right is violated by the inclusion of a religious invocation in official district-wide or college events;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges oppose the inclusion of a religious invocation in any official district-wide or college event, but specifically exempt meetings of student clubs, many of which have a religious focus; and

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges accept the inclusion of a moment of silence if so desired in any such event. MSC Disposition: Local Senates
