What data tools are available to measure student success?  Faculty work to develop student learning while preparing them for their individual goals be it transfer, career advancement, academic preparation, or personal enrichment.  Student equity is central to and deeply intertwined with our focus on student success, and faculty are interested in ensuring our curriculum and student supports are meeting those equity-focused goals.  Funding and statewide initiatives drive the metrics (e.g. throughput. transfer rates, etc...) that our system and many of our colleges prioritize, but often these metrics are considered in aggregate where the focus on individual students can be lost.  Join the ASCCC Data and Research Committee for a discussion of how faculty define student success and share how to lay the foundations for designing good qualitative studies to contextualize quantitative data.

Recognizing the Full Humanity of Our Asian and Pacific Islander Student Communities in the California Community Colleges

Recognizing the Full Humanity of Our Asian and Pacific Islander Student Communities in the California Community Colleges

Date: Tuesday, February 7th, 2023

Time: 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Students who identify as Asian and Pacific Islander make up around 13% of California Community College students. Asian and Pacific Islanders are the fastest-growing ethnic group in California since 2011, growing an additional 25% statewide. After the pandemic, Asian and Pacific Islanders also experienced an explosive increase in racially motivated incidents. These increases should motivate faculty to look at what faculty can do on campus to support our Asian and Pacific Islander student communities. During this webinar, we will discuss some issues currently facing Asian and Pacific Islander students, and pedagogical and student services strategies and supports that faculty can take back to campus.

20 in 20 is both an act of remembrance and an act of systemic resistance. It is a visual reminder of the weight of anti-Blackness and systemic racism that we are carrying into our futures. I lift these names up and call upon you to join me in developing systemic strategies of resistance. In remembering. In re-writing the narrative for Black people in America. In re-designing the structures that stunt our human relations. We must re-imagine the possibilities. We must continue to #SayTheirNames.

Cancelled - 2020 Spring Plenary Session

Oakland Marriott City Center

March 17, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

In an attempt to flatten the curve of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Governor Newsom ordered statewide cancellations of events of more than 250 people, and the CDC released additional guidelines suggesting that gatherings larger than 50 people be cancelled. The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges is heeding the guidance and have decided to postpone the Area Meetings and Spring Plenary Session until further notice. The health and wellbeing of our staff, attendees, and community comes first and we understand that many of our colleges and faculty face additional loads, as colleges transition to remote learning or make the difficult decision of closing the campus. The Academic Senate is here to support you during this time. We are currently putting together some resources to distribute to the field to help support the transitions taking place locally.

We will be sending out communication regarding our annual spring elections in the near future.

If you haven’t already, please contact the Oakland Marriott to ensure your hotel reservation has been cancelled. The Senate Office is taking care of the refunds and will provide a message to all registered attendees on this shortly.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to me- krystinne@asccc.org.

Take care of yourself and take care of each other,
Krystinne
