Welcome to the 2013 Curriculum Institute.
This past year was a challenging one for curriculum leaders. Changes in regulation and system policies have forced us to have difficult conversations at our campuses about the scope of our college’s mission, the inclusion and sequencing of courses in our curriculum, and the offering of degrees, certificates, and programs in order to assist students in reaching their educational goals. Dedicated leaders make the difference, be it a curriculum chair, senate president, or college president. Invested leadership is critical for the success of your local senate. Greetings!
I’m particularly excited by our theme this time–“Rising to the Challenge: Responding to Disruptive Forces.” We wanted a positive tone to our theme but we also wanted to reflect the fact that, as so often is the case, we are dealing with multiple pressures and often pressures that effectively conflict. We’ve been feeling some of the identified “pressures” for quite some time and others are relatively new. These regional meetings will be free to a team of faculty members aspiring to become leaders. Colleges are asked to send a team of up to five current or potential faculty leaders who have an interest in making a meaningful contribution to the effectiveness of their college. In the interest of ensuring a diversity of discipline representation, each team is required to include at least one career technical education faculty member and the inclusion of student services faculty is strongly encouraged.

In our ongoing commitment to provide leadership development activities to faculty across the state, the newly formed Leadership Development Committee is pleased to announce a series of one-day regional workshops on the topic of college leadership. These workshops, in conjunction with our annual Vocational and Faculty Leadership Institutes, are intended to empower faculty by providing participants with the knowledge, skills, and insights needed to be effective advocates and problem-solvers about issues impacting the education of our students. |
