Granting Emeritus Status

Whereas, Evelyn "Sam" Weiss is retiring in June 2002 after a career distinguished by leadership in her discipline of nursing and leadership in governance at the local and state levels;

Whereas, Evelyn "Sam" Weiss has been a very effective member of her local senate for 25 years, serving four terms as president, four years as vice president, and six years as secretary;

Resolution Writing

Whereas, The Resolutions of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges are a central and key component articulating the professional voice of faculty, and the time allotted to the task at session is not adequate for thoughtful work;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate extend the time allotted to resolution writing at the plenary session. MSR

Recognition of Edith Conn

Whereas, Edith Conn has been the longest serving member of the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, including a memorable year as the first woman president;

Whereas, Edith Conn's work and devotion to the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges is without parallel, with particular emphasis on student issues and the Great Teacher's Seminar; and

Faculty Appointments to State Committees, Commissions, and Consultation Groups

Whereas, Faculty appointed to statewide committees, commissions, and consultation groups assume positions of influence for California community college faculty; and

Whereas, There is a need to cultivate interest in and application for these positions;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate distribute, at least once a year, information regarding opportunities for appointments to statewide committees, commissions, and consultation groups, including timelines for applications, qualifications, responsibilities, and compensation. CCLDI

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges opposes the leadership training program proposed in SB 894 (Scott) because among many reasons, it allocates authority for administering the program to a private college, Claremont Graduate University, which already has a memorandum of understanding with a private, self-selected, administrator dominated Community College Leadership Development Institute (CCLDI);

Formation of Academic Senate Committees

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges should always strive to better represent all the state's community colleges;

Whereas, California community colleges should always make an effort to include a wide array of points of view; and

Whereas, The quality and success of the work produced by committees is dependent on the objective formation of committees;

Presentation of Papers and Positions to the Academic Senate

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges frequently advances positions by developing papers which are presented to the Plenary Body; and

Whereas, The membership in reviewing and responding to papers deserves knowledge of the authorship of those papers;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate include the name of the committee advancing the paper and the name (s) of the contributing authors on all position papers presented.
