Academic Senate

InfoNet

Whereas InfoNet is now available to faculty via Internet,

Resolved that the Academic Senate explore the creation of, on the InfoNet bulletin board, the following capabilities:
1. discipline specific discussion and information sharing areas;
2. a registry of contacts for course outlines, syllabi and programs;
3. a registry for interdisciplinary and distance learning curriculum and programs, and
4. a potential California and national discussion area of community college disciplines.

State Committees and Task Forces

Whereas there are Chancellor's Office committees and task forces, though created to deal with regulation implementation but which, in fact, deal with academic and professional matters that are the purview of the Academic Senate, and

Whereas Chancellor's Office task forces and committees often duplicate work of the Academic Senate committees, and

Whereas there is confusion regarding the function of Chancellor's Office committees in consultation and in making policy, especially in light of shared governance and AB 1725, and

Yearly Calendar

Resolved that the Academic Senate direct the Executive Committee to prepare a yearly calendar of Senate activities and academic events, including but not limited to, dates for the following: Hayward award nominations; exemplary program award nominations; nominees to the Board of Governors; IGETC revisions; disciplines list revisions; Executive Committee meetings, area meetings, and Academic Senate Sessions.

Senator Emerita

Whereas, Anita Arellano has been serving students as a faculty member at Monterey Peninsula College since 1965;

Whereas, Anita Arellano has been involved in a leadership role at Monterey Peninsula College, serving 12 years on the local senate; and

Whereas, Anita Arellano has served as the delegate to the Academic Senate for the last ten years;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges confer the status of senator emerita on Anita Arellano upon her retirement.

Senator Emeritus

Whereas, Gary Morgan has served the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges through service on a variety of Senate committees, including the Standards & Practices Committee, the Publications Committee, the Relations with Local Senates Committee, and the Educational Policies Committee, and has co-authored several papers for the Senate through those committees;

Bylaws Revisions

Whereas, Key terms in the Bylaws of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (e.g., "senator," "voting delegate" and "member") are ambiguous;

Whereas, The Bylaws as currently written are not carefully organized and exhibit some lack of elegance in phrasing;

Whereas, The Academic Senate should have a constitution that identifies its functions and principles - as it had before the descriptions of the functions and principles were incorporated into the Bylaws; and

Whereas, The Bylaws of the Academic Senate will be more readable if well-edited;

Legal Services

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has in a previous resolution (Resolution 1.4; Spring 1991) voted to "explore the possibility of obtaining legal assistance, advice and counsel on Senate issues,"

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend that the Executive Committee pursue the concepts, procedures and recommendations in the attached "Legal Services, a Proposal" with the goal of implementation in 1993-94. (See Appendix B)
