Diversifying the Curriculum

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to collect from local senates examples of ways that faculty have changed the curriculum to reflect the contributions of California's diverse population including the disabled, women, ethnic minorities, and other underrepresented groups, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to prepare material on curriculum changes for distribution statewide to local senates.

ESL Articulation

Whereas students often find that ESL courses completed at one California Community College do not fulfill requirements at other California Community Colleges,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges develop a process of articulation in ESL between and among California Community Colleges.

Basic Skills Articulation

Whereas students often find that basic skills courses completed at one California Community College do not fulfill requirements at other California Community Colleges,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges develop a process of articulation in basic skills between and among California Community Colleges.

TOPS Codes

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges request that the Chancellor's Office include representatives from the Academic Senate in the current review and revision of the TOPS Codes.

Prerequisites

Whereas faculty are concerned about student success and persistence, and

Whereas faculty believe that inadequately prepared students are less likely to succeed in courses,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges oppose the requirement of validation studies which require control groups consisting of students who do not possess the necessary prerequisites.

MW Symbol

Whereas the proposed withdrawal symbol "MW" (Military Withdrawal) is intended to cure a problem which is beyond the control of a student, and

Whereas the intent of the "MW" symbol is appropriate and withdrawals for reasons beyond the student's control should not have penalties, and

Whereas there are other circumstances, such as earthquake and fire, which are equally beyond a student's control and result in a student's withdrawing from classes, and

Whereas the creation of this new grade symbol for one unique event is too restrictive,

Programs for New Californians

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges urge the Board of Governors to seek federal funding for programs that support amnesty education for the new Californians, such as citizenship, matriculation, and basic skills, and promote access to the credit curriculum according to the Board of Governor's Basic Agenda.

Contract Education

Whereas contract education is gaining importance in the California community college system, and

Whereas contract education may involve credit, noncredit and not-for-credit (community service) instruction,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges present a position paper on contract education at a future session.

Prerequisites

Whereas the ability of students to learn is dependent upon their preparedness for the course work, and

Whereas proper placement of students is critical to educational success, and

Whereas students who do not meet the prerequisites of a course have a negative influence on the learning environment, and

Whereas class sizes are limited, and

Whereas students who are underprepared require extra time and energy of the teacher thus taking the time from those students who are properly prepared, and
