Modification of Disciplines Review Process

Whereas the current academic senate process for review of minimum qualifications for faculty does not allow for any modification of the initial submission of a proposed change to the Disciplines List, and

Whereas some of the past proposals could have benefited through the amendment process,

Resolved that the Academic Senate change the disciplines review process by sending proposed changes to the Area meetings preceding the Fall Session of the year of the review for discussion and possible revision by resolution, and

Engineering Technology

Whereas the two-year segment of the Engineering Liaison Committee representing Engineering and Engineering Technology programs in community colleges proposed the adoption of a Master's level Engineering Technology discipline, and

Whereas the proposal was deleted after the consultation and hearing process since the Master's Degree in Engineering Technology is not offered in California, and

Whereas the "1996 Disciplines Review and Time Line" adopted at the 1994 Spring Session allows exceptions for emerging disciplines, and

Changes in Disciplines List

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend that the Board of Governors adopt the changes in the Disciplines List as shown below.
DISCIPLINES REQUIRING THE MASTER'S DEGREE
Foreign Language: Master's in the language being taught OR Bachelor's in the language being taught AND Master's in another
language or linguistic OR The equivalent
Interdisciplinary Studies: Master's in the interdisciplinary area OR

Course Placement

Whereas the document, Placement of Courses Within Disciplines, calls for the establishment of a philosophy to maintain the academic integrity of each discipline by assisting senates in the placement of courses into disciplines, and

Eminence/Limited Services Issues

Whereas actual college practices involved in establishing equivalency vary, and

Whereas some colleges refer to "eminence" as a feature of their equivalency processes, and

Whereas some colleges have reported the practice of establishing equivalency contingent on entry to specific courses rather than the discipline as a whole, and

Minimum Qualifications - Vocational Education

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend to the Board of Governors that there be no change in the minimum qualifications for tenure for vocational education instructors, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend to the Chancellor's Office that it carry out the mandated study of the impact of the bachelor's degree minimum qualifications for tenure for vocational education instructors, and
