Support for Campus Equity Week 2003

Whereas, The activities olfaction 2000 (A2K) in spring 2000 and Campus Equity Week in Fall 2001 heightened awareness of the academic and professional issues surrounding the improper use of temporary faculty assignments in the California community colleges;

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges supported the local, state and national campaigns of A2K and Campus Equity Week 2001; and

Whereas, Campus Equity Week 2003 has been set as an international week of activities in academic communities throughout North America for October 27-31, 2003;

ESL and CalWORKs

Whereas the Little Hoover Commission (a standing committee of the California Legislature empowered to analyze efficiency in government agencies and operations) is currently reviewing the California community colleges and has initiated discussion of the mission of the community colleges with particular attention to the inclusion of CalWORKs (California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids program) and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, and

Effective Instructor-Student Contact in Distance Learning

Whereas there are issues related to distance learning that are properly the purview of collective bargaining and some areas that are relevant to pedagogy and academic and professional issues,

Resolved that the Academic Senate direct the Executive Committee to develop a paper, in collaboration with our collective bargaining colleagues covering such areas as faculty load, class size, compensation and related issues, with regard to distance learning and teaching, and

Disciplines List

Whereas both written and oral testimony given through the consultation process used for the review of minimum qualifications for faculty in the California Community Colleges system known as the "Disciplines List" opposed the changes recommended in Resolutions 10.07 through 10.19, and

Whereas the Standards and Practices Committee of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommended to the Executive Committee of the Senate that these resolutions now numbered 10.07 through 10.19 not be adopted by the Spring Plenary Session 1999 based on this evidence,

Change to the Disciplines List - Add Film Studies

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend that the Board of Governors adopt the following proposed change in the Disciplines List:
Add as a discipline requiring a Master's degree:
Film Studies:
Master's degree in film, drama/theater arts, or mass communication OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in media studies, English, or communication OR
The equivalent.
