2010 Spring Plenary Session

Event Dates

2010 Spring Plenary Session was held April 15-17, 2010 at SFO Airport Hyatt Regency, Burlingame, CA.

Welcome

I look forward to seeing you at the Academic Senate’s Spring 2010 Plenary Session. It is probably obvious why the theme “Changing Climate” was selected: the climate in our state and on our campuses could not be more erratic. The changes are seen in the students we serve, the funding we receive, the multiple and sometimes competing demands from the workplace, the reduction of student services, and the unprecedented need for seats in our classes. Even the mission of the community colleges is in question today. Our committees have planned breakouts to inform and support the work of local senates and to stimulate discussion of key issues facing our colleges and the entire system. You will see there is surely something of interest to everyone in this program. I am delighted that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Brian Murphy, President of De Anza College and a keen observer as well as participant in the evolution of the California Community Colleges. He will provide perspective and context for the difficult conversations we are holding locally and statewide, as we face the growth of some programs and services, while others shrink. Thank you for joining with other faculty as we face together the changing climate in California’s Community Colleges.

Jane Patton, President
