Whereas 4-year merit-based awards made by the Student Aid Commission out of the state general funds exist for undergraduate education, and

Whereas five years of eligibility already exist for nursing and engineering students, and

Whereas teacher shortages presently exist and are projected to increase dramatically in the next decade,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges support the principle of extending the merit-based grant awards of the Student Aid Commission from 4 to 5 years for teacher credential students, as proposed in Assembly Bill 2707 (Hughes).
