Whereas historically the age of independent status for determination of financial aid has been 18 years of age, with appropriate documentation, and

Whereas the age of determination of financial aid for students was changed to 24, and

Whereas students under 24 years of age who need financial aid to finance their education must include their parent's income,

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend changes to relevant state and federal law to lower the age of independent status from 24 years of age to 18 years of age for the purpose of qualifying for financial aid to facilitate retention, transfer, and completion of educational goals, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate work with other groups, including the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), to lower the age of independent status to 18 for the purpose of qualifying for financial aid.
