Educate local senates about the importance of internally coding and tracking these funds categorically to ensure they are used to support those effective practices specified in the Basic Skills Initiative and the document Basic Skills as a Foundation for Student Success in California Community Colleges.
Status Report

BSI committees have done this at the 2007 & 2008 Regional Meetings. This will also be emphasized in the Fall 2008 Plenary Breakout on BSI.

Whereas, The Basic Skills Initiative is a joint priority for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, the Chief Student Services Officers, the Chief Instructional Officers, the Chief Executive Officers and the System Office;

Whereas, The recommendations of the Basic Skills Initiative are supported in the publication Basic Skills as a Foundation for Student Success in California Community Colleges, which also supports the self assessment and planning agenda for student success;

Whereas, The California Governor and Legislature have allocated more than $33.1 million annually in 2007-08 for the ongoing support of this Initiative; and

Whereas, These funds are specifically intended to support underprepared students to acquire English as a Second Language, mathematics, English, and reading skills needed for success, as well as provide necessary student support services, curriculum and staff development;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges educate local senates about the importance of internally coding and tracking these funds categorically to ensure they are used to support those effective practices specified in the Basic Skills Initiative and the document Basic Skills as a Foundation for Student Success in California Community Colleges.
