Status Report

Completed. Page 43 of the Program and Course Approval Handbook addresses this and CCCCO reports that only one degree with areas of emphasis has been approved with Transfer Studies, for College of the Sequoias. Here are the titles:

Transfer Studies: Agriculture and Environmental Science
Transfer Studies: Arts & Humanities
Transfer Studies: Business
Transfer Studies: Communication Studies
Transfer Studies: Elementary Teaching Preparation
Transfer Studies: Math and Science
Transfer Studies: Social and Behavioral Sciences

There are also a few Certificates of Achievement that include "Transfer" in the title, and a few applications that were recently received with similar proposed titles. As those applications are reviewed the colleges are encouraged to re-consider the titles.

Whereas, The use of the word "transfer" in degree titles may lead students to believe the completion of the degree ensures transfer to a four-year institution; and

Whereas, Students may believe that all courses they successfully complete for a "transfer" degree are transferable;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges work with local senates, local curriculum committees, and chief instructional officers (CIOs) to eliminate the use of the term "transfer" in program titles for the associate degree.
