A letter transmitting the resolution was sent to local senates.

Whereas Email privacy in faculty-to-faculty and faculty-to-student communications is an area of great concern to faculty, and

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has recently published two major position papers in this area, and

Whereas those papers recommend that faculty establish policy or contract language that provides protection for faculty and students by establishing a higher standard of privacy appropriate to higher education that protects the free exchange of ideas and materials and that goes beyond the legal minimum pertaining in the corporate world,

Resolved that the Academic Senate advise local senates that until acceptable privacy protection for all faculty-to-faculty and faculty-to-student electronic communication has been agreed to locally in policy and/or contract language, they should use an external Email provider with an adequate privacy policy rather than use college electronic resources.
