The resolution was addressed at a Fall 2009 breakout and in a January 2010 Rostrum article by committee members David Morse and Pamela Watkins.
Whereas, Resolution 9.05 S08 requested that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges research the current statewide practices for implementing ethnic studies as required in Title 5 55063 (b) (1) and report back findings and recommendations; and
Whereas, Research on statewide practices indicated that approximately 50% of the community colleges have instituted an ethnic studies requirement based upon a specific course, while the rest of the colleges have followed Title 5 by embedding ethnic studies classes within the required General Education subject areas identified in Title 5;
Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges encourage local curriculum committees to review the Title 5 requirements with respect to the ethnic studies requirement and assess whether or not their practices are compliant and, if issues are found, consider ways to meet the requirements.
