Whereas the proposed withdrawal symbol "MW" (Military Withdrawal) is intended to cure a problem which is beyond the control of a student, and
Whereas the intent of the "MW" symbol is appropriate and withdrawals for reasons beyond the student's control should not have penalties, and
Whereas there are other circumstances, such as earthquake and fire, which are equally beyond a student's control and result in a student's withdrawing from classes, and
Whereas the creation of this new grade symbol for one unique event is too restrictive,
Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges join with the California Association of Community College Registrars and Admissions Officers to urge the Board of Governors to adopt a withdrawal symbol which would relieve students from the cost and penalties associated with a withdrawal for reasons of natural disaster as well as military conflict, and
Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend that local boards of trustees have discretionary power to administer locally the "MW" symbol,
Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend that the Board of Governors have the power to authorize the "MW" symbol for state and national occurrences.
