Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges worked closely with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office in the revisions of the Program and Course Approval Handbook;

Whereas, The section entitled "Course Repetition" contains a sentence that has caused concern among faculty across the state: "It is not the intent of the regulation that basic skills or ESL courses generally be eligible to be so designated [for course repetition]" (page 36); and

Whereas, Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Curriculum Committee strongly recommends that this sentence be removed from the Program and Course Approval Handbook;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate work with the Chancellor's Office to remove from the Program and Course Approval Handbook the following sentence: "It is not the intent of the regulation that basic skills or ESL courses generally be eligible to be so designated for course repetition]" (page 36); and

Resolved, That the Academic Senate also seek to amend the immediate subsequent sentence in the handbook as follows: "In basic skills and ESL courses, where further skill needs to be developed, generally an additional course level should be offered wherever practicable." (Changed and added language in italics.)
