Area News

The state's community colleges are presently divided into four areas (A, B, C, D), two in the North and two in the South. This four-area grouping is the formal basis for local senate representation to the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. Each area elects its Area Representative who serves for two years on the Executive Committee; all areas then elect two at-large representatives, as well as North (Areas A and B) and South Representatives (Area C and D). The Area Representatives are responsible for coordinating two area meetings each year. At these meetings, held each fall and spring prior to the upcoming plenary session, local senate delegates (often the senate president, president-elect, or past president) meet at a college in their area. They discuss matters of concern to their areas, review proposed resolutions to be voted on at session, and generate their own resolutions. The local senate delegate represents the positions and perspectives of their local senate at these meetings and gathers information to take back to the local senate for direction before Session. Area representatives are also available to consult with or visit local senates. Requests for such visits should be forwarded through the Academic Senate Office at info [at] asccc.org (info[at]asccc[dot]org).

Area A

Beginning at the California/Oregon border and sweeping down through the central valley to Bakersfield, Area A covers the largest geographical region of all the ASCCC Areas and contains 28 rural, suburban and urban community colleges. To stay connected and network with colleagues, Area A has two meetings scheduled over the course of the academic year; one in fall and one in spring. In addition to the meetings, faculty are kept up to date on pertinent information through the Area A listserv.

The Area A Representative is Stephanie Curry from Reedley College.

Area B

Covering the entirety of the greater Bay Area, Area B contains 34 California community colleges. To stay connected and network with colleagues, Area B has meetings prior to the fall and spring plenary sessions, as well as meetings on the Friday of each plenary. In addition to the meetings, faculty are kept up to date on pertinent information through the Area B listserv.

The Area B Representative is Karen Chow from De Anza College.

Area C

Area C is comprised of 27 colleges, ranging from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo County in the north to Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington to the south and east to Mount San Antonio College in Walnut and Citrus College in Glendora. Within the scope of this extensive geographic region are the nine colleges from the Los Angeles Community College District. This area has one meeting in the fall and another in the spring prior to the plenary sessions, and we meet at the fall and spring plenary sessions. Communication to the area colleges is done through the Area C listserv.

The Area C Representative is Erik Reese from Moorpark College.

Area D

The colleges in Area D are located in southern California and include community college districts in Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. It includes the largest number of college and district academic senates from among the Academic Senate for California Community College’s four geographic regions: 35. The colleges in Area D range from large urban (Long Beach City College, San Diego City College) to small and very rural (Barstow, Copper Mountain, Palo Verde College). Area D includes some of the oldest colleges in the California community college system: Fullerton College was the third to open in the state, tied with Bakersfield opening in 1913, and San Diego opened the following year. Area D also includes what has been one of the highest population growth areas in the country—the Inland Empire—and the two most recently accredited colleges in the California community college system: Moreno Valley College and Norco College. Area D is proud to have contributed two of the Academic Senate for California Community College’s recent state presidents in the persons of Hoke Simpson (2001-03) and Kate Clark (2003-05), both of whom have been recognized as senators emeritus in their retirement.

The Area D Representative is Maria-José Zeledón-Pérez from San Diego City College.
