Whereas counseling faculty play a critical role in promoting student access and success in the California Community Colleges, and
Whereas the counseling discipline is recognized in the Disciplines List adopted by the Board of Governors, and
Whereas the mission of community colleges counseling stated in a 1978 Report of a Statewide Task Force on Counseling accepted by the Board of Governors and supported in the Education Code, Section 51018, includes academic counseling, career counseling, and personal counseling, and
Whereas matriculation plans mandate increased workloads for counselors: orientation, assessment interpretation, and assisting students in establishing career goals and developing educational plans, and
Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges strongly supports student equity, and
Whereas despite matriculation funding, the California Community College Counselors Association's 1992-93 Statewide Counseling and Advising Services Survey Report demonstrates vast differences in counseling FTE-to-student ratios at different college campuses across the state,
Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to research and recommend an appropriate counseling FTE-to-student ratio for all California Community Colleges, and
Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend that the results of the research be used for determining success on student equity indicators. M/S/U DISPOSITION: Executive Committee
